With many people looking to make their homes more ‘green’ and self-sufficient, and looking to cut back on utilities cost, more and more people are becoming interested in a Home Wind Generator or a home wind turbine to generate electric power. Wind turbines can be more effective, a better value, and produce fewer pollutants than other forms of power. They can save a customer money by freeing them from relying on the power company, and are expected to return a customer’s investment in 15-20 years. At-home wind turbines are particularly useful in areas where there is no power available otherwise, and in areas with frequent power outages. |

A professional set-up cost typically starts at $10,000, however,
someone with just minor technical and electrical knowledge can
easily and safely install their own wind turbine for thousands
less. There is considerable interest in wind power, however,
many homeowners believe that they cannot afford a system or they
would not get their money back. However, several states offer
monetary incentives to homeowners who are interested in
installing alternative energy on their property. In areas with
good wind speed, a wind turbine might produce enough electricity
that it will be able to completely power your home and have
electricity left over, which would be sold back to the power
company, potentially earning you a profit.
If your monthly electricity bills average $100 or more, then
having a mid-sized home wind turbine may be a good option for
you. Having a home wind turbine also creates significantly less
damage to the environment than other forms of energy. The
traditional forms of creating power, coal power, natural gas
power, and nuclear power, all produce dangerous chemicals in the
process of making power. The biggest producer of power is coal
power, and this is responsible for a large percentage of CO2, a
gas found to be one of the leading elements in greenhouse gases.
A wind turbine creates no environmental pollution. Small wind
turbines pose little danger to birds. They do, however, emit
some noise pollution, and they can be, some people believe,
“visual pollution”. Some websites offering small home wind
turbines advise potential customers to check the bylaws of their
town and to discuss their turbine with neighbors, because wind
turbines can be a fairly large…even ones made to power a home
have to have a 30 ft tower. Wind generators are particularly
useful in remote locations where traditional grid power is not
available, and in areas where power outages are common.
However, only wind turbines with battery capacity work during
power outages and in locations off the grid. Turbines with
batteries charge the batteries, and then the batteries power the
home. This means that when the power is out, if there happens to
be no wind, there would still be a reserve of power. Turbines
without batteries power a home directly, sell any excess power
back into the grid, and would not work during a power outage.
